County Ramble: Welly

Spent sometime over the past several weekends riding around Wellington county. Some was good and some was bad - very bad.

Weekend No.1
A leisurely paced ride through some rolling countryside, getting reaquainted with some old routes and sharing in anothers first road ride.

Weekend No.2
First Ontario Cup Road Race [57th Good Friday Road Race] of the season held near Hamilton. Approximately 16 local racers made the trip with a wide range of outcomes. There was a win, a top placing, some pack placings, some DQ's, OTL's, DNF's, mechanicals, and a blown out the back [as per the author of this post]. Detailed results @ Ontario Cycling Association.

Lesson:
Less leisurely rides.

  1. Lesson #2
Don't cross the yellow line, and don't race on the yellow brick road (the race organizers would obviously just take everyone's entry money and then DQ the field)

  5. Re: Weekend No 1 County Ramble - Welly Ride

This was my first "road bike ride" since prior rides have been on my mountain bike - which has been my only bike up to now. I do like the mountain bike for getting dirty in the trails or freezing on winter road rides - but the new road bike certainly makes the difference for road riding. Next is a new upgraded mountain bike and then a cross bike, but I will see how the CFO at home goes for it.

My first time bike ride was on Aug 23/08 with Adam and since then I have journaled 99 rides up to Easter Sunday. My score would have been better, but I was recently side lined 3-4 weeks after a hard fall - old age makes a slow recovery.

A quick story which I shared with Adam - in 1972 I was in Sarnia and needed to get back to Comber after hitching up there. So I bought a sweet lime green 10 speed bike on credit at K-mart and road home 80 miles. Arrived home and never road again. Sold the bike to pay the K-mart account. It has taken me 36 years later to ride again, but now I am hooked. Thanks to Adam!

  6. I can only assume you can upgrade your mountain bike AND get a crossbike on CREDIT at Max Edge!!

  7. Congrats on your return to cycling! Many seasoned riders will not brave the conditions you've done most of your riding in.
